Rosalyn Maassarany is a local Barrie entrepreneur looking to take a bite out of the decorative cake scene in Barrie. Rosalyn started a bootstrap business out of her home three years ago, out of a desire to find life balance and focus on her family, as well as express herself artistically through her designs. She offers custom cake design and sweets made to order, and has found her groove in the wedding and event market. Her talent shines through with her stunning decorated cakes, and while the competition is stiff, “There’s a lot of us out there”, she’s recently been named Best Pastry Shop in Barrie for 2017, by Top Choice Awards.

Advertising is key, according to Rosalyn, but the quality of your product is definitely the core of business and what keeps people coming around. “The business grows a lot by reputation, so you have to make sure your product is of highest quality – and sourcing local ingredients is something that has become extremely important to consumers.” Rosalyn also mentions the importance of social media advertising, and the ability to really zero in on your target market. Aside from word of mouth and social media, Rosalyn relies on good ol’ fashioned networking, and has produced style shoots with other local entrepreneurs. When I asked her about her networking experiences, she said for the most part she has had “great experiences – after all, we’re all in this together!”, and felt welcomed into the atmosphere.

I asked Rosalyn if she had any advice for future food entrepreneurs who are considering getting into the industry, she said that the best advice she could give would be to “Do your research, and know what you product is worth. But more importantly, don’t forget what you are worth – never undersell yourself.”
